How do you alert your friend that he is near a white shark?

Scuba diving is one of the best sport in the world. Just like any other sports, as a scuba diver you are going to face certain risks. Not really life threatening but all the same you need to take some precautions. As a scuba diver you are going to be meeting different sea animals and among the animals are sharks.

I have been scuba diving for a long time no and I have to say that sharks are not dangerous to the divers. But there are some sharks that are considered aggressive to the humans. Among the aggressive sharks are the white shark, bull shark and some even consider hammerhead sharks as dangerous.

I will tell you without any fear of contradiction that there is nothing like men eater sharks. I have been following news about scuba diving and I don’t remember hearing on regular basis of divers being attacked by sharks.

Most sharks are predators and they have no intentions of getting hurt so they have no problem with humans, they will just concentrate on their favorite food and you can even swim alongside them without any fear.

Most people that have been attacked by sharks, it actually happened very early in the morning or dusk and those people hurt are actually not divers but just swimmers on the surface. Sharks usually confuses them with other sea creatures like turtles or seals.

A shark will take a small bite and when it realizes that it is a human it will just spit and go its way because human flesh is not sharks’ kind of thing, if you know what I mean. To a person the small bite by the shark is not going to be so small because the mouth of a shark is not small plus it has some number of teeth.

A shark will only be dangerous to a diver if you start changing its behavior. Don’t try to feed them because they might be dangerous because when sharks are eating they can get into a different mode that you are not going to like since they will start biting everything on their way.

But it will not hurt to take a precaution will it? Since we have already established that white shark can be aggressive, if you spot on just behind your buddy how do you inform him that there is a shark in his presence? Because you will be wearing scuba diving gears it can be very hard to show emotions.

The most important thing you should do is develop a sign language which you are going to use while under water.

How to communicate while under water.

If you have are a scuba diver who has dived before then you know that when you are under water, talking to your buddy has never been option. And it is very possible that your friend will not understand what you are trying to say by waving or producing some funny sounds when you are trying to warn him about a coming danger.

This is why it is always very important to have a language that you can use to communicate with your buddy when you are under water.

Safety is always a major concern during diving and you should make sure the communication you develop is clear to understand and anyone can get it. With a well- developed sign language you can be sure that everyone is going to have a fun and safe dive.

There are different hand signals that you can use to warn your buddy of the danger lurking him and you should make sure you know a few before you make your first dive. Check out some of the basic hand signals that every scuba diver must know.

Stop.

If your buddy is going to the direction of the white shark or you just want him to stop because of one reason or another, it is very important you learn how to tell him to stop without causing any confusion. Signaling your buddy to stop is pretty simple and all you need to do is hold up one hand just like you would tell a person to stop in any other place. The sign language don’t need to change just because you are under water.

Going up or down.

Let your buddy he is danger and he needs to go up or down by just using your thumb. The thumbs up illustrate that he should go up and the thumbs down indicate that he should go down. The same rule will apply if it is you who want to go up or down.

Changing direction.

If you want your buddy to change the direction he is following because you have noticed a potential danger, the same rule of the thumb will apply. Point with your thumb to indicate the direction he should follow in order to avoid the danger. When you want to head to a particular direction, just point the direction with your thumb and starting moving towards the direction. Your friend will get what you mean and he will follow you.

Turn around.

If you just noticed a white shark in the direction you are all going then it means that it is time to turn around, but how do you let your buddies know that it is time to turn around and you can’t shout? Well, it is pretty simple. Just raise your index finger and rotate it in a circular manner and everybody will get it that it is time to turn around.

Help!

If this time it is you who is in danger and you need help ASAP, you need to wave your entire arm towards your pals and they will definitely understand that something is not right. Repeat waving your arm until someone notices you are in danger.
