Human has a lot of capabilities to face a lot of challenges. And this is human nature or you say human have the curiosity to explore his strength without any tension even his life in danger.

Shallow water blackout is a very dangerous thing some people try to hold his or her breath inside the water even know that he or she has the capability to hold his or her breath for a long-time.

In our body-brain is playing a primary role, due to our brain, our body performs all work, if our brain dead or sleep, we can’t move or maybe we are going in a coma state. In shallow water blackouts, our body is going in a coma state our body parts not perform properly because our brain needs oxygen to perform all work and I already told you in the human body our brain plays the main role to control our body parts.

When you hold your breath for a long time inside the water you become unconscious due to reducing the oxygen level. Due to holding your breath for long time oxygen level reduces and oxygen is very important for the brain to perform proper work.

Often we related to this state with hyperventilation, some of the divers and swimmers use this technique and hyperventilation is a very dangerous technique. Without the appropriate level of carbon dioxide swimmers and divers hold their breath for a long time, due to this the body fails to recognize them for oxygen, and this condition is called hypocapnia.

What is Breakpoint?

In our body, we have two types of chemical sensors. And these chemical sensors detect the level of oxygen and carbon dioxide inside our bodies.

These sensors protect our lack of oxygen inside our blood and also maintain the oxygen level. The carbon dioxide sensor is very sensitive when the carbon dioxide increases its reaches to the breakpoint first.

When the swimmer wants to stay in the water for a long time and hold his breath the breakpoint forces him to go back to the surface and take a breath.

If the person crosses the breakpoint limit then his oxygen level becomes decrease and his or her brain is not properly working due to lack of oxygen.

After decreasing the oxygen level he or she is not in a conscious state, he or she tries to breathe inside the water and this time is very dangerous because the water is inhaled into the lungs.

A lot of cases reported every year in Australia people die due to Shallow Water Black. People are trying free to dive in the ocean and the public pool just the sake of enjoyment.

A lot of cases are reported people are trying to swim long distances underwater and then drowning, even in home swimming pools.

What is Sign and Symptoms of SHALLOW WATER blackout??

It is very hard for the rescue staff to recognize the symptoms of the diver when he or she inside the water. Although there are many different signs and symptoms of a blackout.

These surface buddies or rescue staffs are highly trained to help the blackout swimmers. They observe the divers and note the movements. If they feel someone in trouble they are not waiting. Because if they are waiting for the confirmation maybe it’s too late and they will face major life loss. The surface buddies or rescue staff follows the following steps.

  • Suddenly the swimmer stops swimming without any movement
  • The divers legs not moving
  • The swimmers open his or her arms outside the body
  • The swimmer close his or her eyes just like in the unconscious state
  • Their head may roll forward
  • The swimmer will begin sinking
  • Their body may occur some jerks

What is First aid for shallow water blackout??

This is very hard for the rescue men should give all care to the unconscious diver into panic condition. For this condition, they are highly trained from psychological, because in this time the person who to help the victim is stronger from psychological, by physically he or she should be strong but in this panic situation, they need to be more strong from psychologically.

Some of the following points which rescuer should give to the unconscious diver:

  • The rescuer should put some support to the diver’s neck
  • When rescuer rescues the diver it’s very important to notice that more water is not entering from his or her month. The rescuer should use his or her hand to cover the diver mouths to prevent more water to come inside.
  • The rescuer should contact the victim this is very important because if the victim becomes unconscious then it is very hard for the rescuer to get the victim back to the surface.
  • Once the rescuer gets back the victim on the surface the first step he should be done tilt the head upwards slightly to keep the airway open.
  • When you rescue someone any flotation device is very helpful to you such as float, line, or boat.
  • The rescuer must remove all types of equipment from the victim like a mask.
  • The rescuer must wait for the diver to regain consciousness (breathing, responsiveness to question)
  • If the diver comes from the shallow water blackout his or her response time is 3 to 10 seconds.
  • And if the diver comes from deep water blackout his or her response time is 10 to 30 seconds.
  • This is the rescuer’s responsibility to continually absorb the diver until he or she is breathing on their own. There is a possibility that the diver will surface and the blackout. That’s why this is the rescuer’s responsibility to observe the victim until he or she is totally fine.
  • Whenever this type of incident takes place all diving should be stopped.

Victim fails to Breath

If the diver does not respond or breathe following steps must follow:

  • If the rescuer feels that the victim does not breathe, the rescuer should ditch all weights and mask from his body.
  • The rescuer should start basic aid like arousal, open the airway and check his heartbeat.
  • The rescuer starts performing artificial respiration.
  • Must put him or her out from the water.
  • Once the rescuer takes him or her back on shore then continue airway control, artificial respiration, and check the pulse.
  • If the condition is not good the rescuer call on the emergency medical system.

Deterrence and Patient Education

To decreases, the drowning incidence is just to prevent it. I think 70% to 80% incident of drowning people is preventable.

In past, we have been noted that qualified dive operators recommended that to attempt the hyperventilation to improve breath-holding abilities but for the passage of time this exercise is false.

Some medical institutes study on it and they found that actually, they decrease breath-holding capability and safety.

Additionally, lifeguards on the local and public pool should be well trained and have the ability to face all type of dangerous situations especially hyperventilation type.

If a lifeguard is very well trained then significantly reduce the incidence of death from drowning.

Another factor that can be played a very important role in the maintenance of the swimming pool. Water should ideally be clear and the bottom of the pool sees clearly. First aid types of equipment must be nearby the lifeguard like phone, rescue kit, etc.

Conclusion

In this article we are discussing on “Shallow water blackout” and we are trying to explain what shallow water blackout is and why it’s happened and what the prevention we will take.

The major key to preventing Shallow Water Blackout is prevention through education and correction in people who have risky behaviors; it begins from especially those who are professionally swimmer and trainers, we also give the prevention guide to parents, teachers, the public community, health nurses, swim coaches, scuba diving instructors, and military trainers.

In the past, this is compulsory for swimmers and trainers to attempt hyperventilation to improve the breath-holding abilities but after that study prove that this exercise is not got for health, due to doing this we are decreasing the breath-holding capability and safety.

We are also discussing very important points if you will find any person in shallow water blackout condition what will you do in this scenario. How you can find the person inside the water he is suffering from shallow water blackout.

And what would be your first step when you see this type of person and how you will give him or her first aid.
